Still Life Painting

So I took advantage of some free time this Labor Day weekend and tried my hand at some still life painting. The sunflowers are out of my garden and the painting was completed in 3 days.

More Plein Aire

The Finger Lakes area of Upsate NY has a limitless supply of places to paint. The two most recent paintings were done at Oak Orchard Park along the Seneca canal and a small pond found adjacent to the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. The "Refuge Pond" painting was done soley with painting knives.

Painting Plein Aire

So I've been doing a lot of painting outside lately. I love it. The light is perfect and the weather here has been great, not to hot. Typically if the sun is bright I will paint in the shade somewhere. When it's overcast I will move my easel out side. Here are some pics of me painting on our enclosed porch out of the bright sun listening to Frank Turner.

Painting Progression

So I thought I would post a couple of pics of a painting in progress. This one is of a Japanese Redbud in full bloom found in my backyard.

So I've been spending my weekend mornings seaching the country side for places to practice my plein air painting. Although I need a LOT of practice this has been a fun experience. The above paintings were done mostly with pallet knives.

Painting with Knives

Passageway - Oil on Panel

These are a few of my recent paintings. Most of these are 9x7 or smaller. I have recently been experimenting with painting knives and I really enjoy it. I feel that the paintings have a lot more energy and movement than some of the more detailed paintings I've done in the past.
