Exhibition at Finger Lakes Credit Union

A Painting of Maisie

So I have been in my depressive phase of painting, meaning that I haven't picked up a brush in close to a year. Part of that was due to the fact that we recently moved and the chaos of moving is not conducive to painting.
Once we were moved in I got my new space set up with my easel, taboret, and paints... then I just sat there...waiting for inspiration to hit.

A short time later Mary's Uncle, David, commissioned me to do a portrait of his friends dog, Maisie. I accepted and dove right in. It was great to smell the oils and the mineral spirits once again ( I love that mixture of smells). I also love the feel of the paint as it's being manipulated on the canvas.

Thanks for the kick start, David. Hopefully I can start producing again.

The Atwater Estate Vineyards

During the month of October my work is on display at The Atwater Estate Vineyards and Winery.

The show's theme is landscapes, flora and fauna of the Finger Lakes region.

Sunday, Mary and I took a trip to Atwater Estate in Burdett, NY and set up the display. If you happen to be traveling in the Finger Lakes area, be sure to stop by this winery on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, enjoy some great wine, a beautiful view of Seneca Lake and a selection of my recent paintings.

Chrysanthemums

So here is the final image of my painting "Chrysanthemums". This was a fun painting to do. I explored more with glazes on this piece than I have with other pieces. This piece will be donated to a benefit auction for the Rochester City Ballet.

Here is the second progress pic for the Chrysanthemum painting I'm doing. I'm trying something a little different with this painting. I am hearkening back to my acrylic days and putting down layers of thin glazes in an attempt to create depth.

As usual I have several paintings going at once. Here are some progress pics of a hollyhock I'm also working on.

Jeremy Lipking

So last weekend Mary and I flew out to see the new Jeremy Lipkin g show at Arcadia Gallery. I was not disappointed. First of all Jeremy's work was exquisite. Just inspiring. As I have said many times it was Jeremy's work that inspired me to start painting with oils and expand my subject matter.
Second we had an opportunity to meet Jeremy and his beautiful family. This was a great thrill for me. I just wished I had an opportunity to talk with him longer.

So as usual I have several paintings going on at once and the season being what it is my subject matter is flowers.

I recently completed a quick painitng of some mums we have at the house. I used only a painting knife to complete it. This was a fun piece.

I have also started a larger studio painting of the same Chrysanthemums. I will post newer pics as the painting progresses.

Why Do I Paint

Why do I paint? Good question. It occurred to me the other day that perhaps the reason I paint is because I am attempting to experience the creative side of God. Certainly God created all that there is in this world, both the ugly and the beautiful (our perception) out of materials He had at hand. I try to do the same thing, only I use canvas, charcoal, oils and brushes. I copy the artwork that God has already produced. I have learned about light, color, texture and composition from the Master Artist

So I finally took the next step in my art carrer, such as it is,and created my own website...www.normschneiter.com. Here I will post all of my newest works as well as a few of the oldies but goodies. This site is a work in progress and I'm just learning the whole complicated system. Check it out and let me know what you think.

The Finger Lakes area of Upsate NY has a limitless supply of places to paint. The two most recent paintings were done at Oak Orchard Park along the Seneca canal and a small pond found adjacent to the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. The "Refuge Pond" painting was done soley with painting knives.

Painting Plein Aire

So I've been doing a lot of painting outside lately. I love it. The light is perfect and the weather here has been great, not to hot. Typically if the sun is bright I will paint in the shade somewhere. When it's overcast I will move my easel out side. Here are some pics of me painting on our enclosed porch out of the bright sun listening to Frank Turner.
